Firstly, this "Alum Block" is not a true cut alum but one that is reconstituted from alum dust / bits / waste from the process of making true Cut Alum Blocks. This should have been stated in the product description. Secondly, whatever process the brand used, it was shoddy. I received my purchase with a good portion of the block broken and crumbled into bits, powdered. Not only did I lost about ¼ of the block, powered, (first picture, the one with the Gentleman Jon Box) the block looked like it was compressed poorly. with the core much more loosely packed than the edge. Had mine didn't break apart, I would have been able to use this block for a while until I hit that loose core in a few months or so, and the block will start to crumble. To be clear, (last picture with an actual cut alum block) a proper alum block, that I had dropped and while it chipped, it didn't crumble but smoothed out to a glass like block after some use. (I had it for over 2 years now) The Gentleman Jon's that I received, didn't even survived shipping, and now that the loose core is exposed, probably will not last too long with use. This is a very poorly and shoddily made product. I do not recommend anyone buying this. Go buy an Osma block instead. It's a poor quality alum block. I threw it away and purchased an Osma alum block which is made in France. **Q: does this help prevent shaving bumps from ingrown hair ???** A: Hello Anthony - Yes this is one of the main benefits of alum block. The astringent properties not only stop bleeding, but for many people will subdue the irritations that cause razor bumps/razor burn. **Q: Is it recommended to use this product without an aftershave? If not, should this product be used and allowed to dry before the aftershave is applied?** A: It has no scent. So, if you want to smell good, use an after shave. If you dont, I suppose you could use it just fine by itself. This does not affect it's styptic abilities. However, there is plenty to be said about the benefits of using it with an aftershave, especially an alcohol based after shave. I highly suggest you use an aftershave with it, but you dont have to.I let it dry, and then apply a splash-on after shave. This helps remove any residue that some claim all alum blocs leave behind (though I have had no residue with this product). **Q: Does anyone use this with witch hazel? How is the combination?** A: I use this product in combination with witch hazel with no ill effects. The alum stops bleeding from any nicks but can leave my face a bit dry.
