The temperature to kill the bacteria living in feces/poop has to be BOILING literally - 212 degrees (or higher depending on your geographic altitude) Fahrenheit - and some of the bacteria you have to boil 20 minutes before they die. There is no water heater or dishwasher that works at that temp. Just don't do it! **Q: I want a scooper that picks up smaller clumps. Will this one retain those annoying small bits ? Already have a metal one for large clumps.** A: It definitely catches clumps "smaller than a raisin" (one review here suggested otherwise). The grate spacing is 4mm (according to the specs they listed) which is about 1/8th of an inch (teensy bit larger). Take a tape measure out & you'll see how small that is. It's about the perfect size for me–if much smaller, the clumping clay litter I use would quickly clog the scoop, letting no litter through. Any larger and it would let larger clumps of litter through (making it no better than the standard plastic scoop I have). There will still be small clumps that get through (there are scoops on Amazon that have smaller grate holes, but as reviews I read noted, it takes a very long time to get through the litter because they so readily clog). This one is the goldilocks size for me. **Q: Does the metal go all the way into the handle ?** A: There is NO flex in the handle. Solid. **Q: Does this scrape the wet clay off the bottom of the box? My cat likes to dig holes and pee at the bottom of the box and cover it.** A: Yes it does! You can turn it over to really scrape hard to loosen " stuck on the bottom pee"! Will never use a plastic one again and having to replace plastic over and over makes this one well worth the $. Holder is very sturdy as well. 100% recommend this scooper/ shifter..... using litter like Ever Clean, I can turn the wetness over and over to make it dryer to not stick. I'm not sure I can do so without it sounding like pure hyperbole. This scoop is awesome, great, unrivaled, the be all end all of litter scoops. This is the scoop I have been looking for since I first discovered the horrors associated with indoor feline companions. What used to be a 30-40 minute journey of knee and back pain multiple times a week has become a ten minute routine of ease. No longer does my wrist tire of constant shaking to sift litter away from my cats' excrement. No longer must I fear scraping urine soaked litter from the sides of the box lest my scoop become clogged. No more must I constantly shift from kneeling to standing to relieve my aching knee joints or sore back. The only thing I can't say is that this scoop has somehow made cleaning up after my cats fun. It still sucks, but oh so much less than it has for the last many moons. The solid construction means that I won't worry about the scoop bending or breaking as I pick up my cats heavy clumps of urine.
