The temperature to kill the bacteria living in feces/poop has to be BOILING literally - 212 degrees (or higher depending on your geographic altitude) Fahrenheit - and some of the bacteria you have to boil 20 minutes before they die. There is no water heater or dishwasher that works at that temp. Just don't do it! **Q: I want a scooper that picks up smaller clumps. Will this one retain those annoying small bits ? Already have a metal one for large clumps.** A: It definitely catches clumps "smaller than a raisin" (one review here suggested otherwise). The grate spacing is 4mm (according to the specs they listed) which is about 1/8th of an inch (teensy bit larger). Take a tape measure out & you'll see how small that is. It's about the perfect size for me–if much smaller, the clumping clay litter I use would quickly clog the scoop, letting no litter through. Any larger and it would let larger clumps of litter through (making it no better than the standard plastic scoop I have). There will still be small clumps that get through (there are scoops on Amazon that have smaller grate holes, but as reviews I read noted, it takes a very long time to get through the litter because they so readily clog). This one is the goldilocks size for me. **Q: Does the metal go all the way into the handle ?** A: There is NO flex in the handle. Solid. **Q: Does this scrape the wet clay off the bottom of the box? My cat likes to dig holes and pee at the bottom of the box and cover it.** A: Yes it does! You can turn it over to really scrape hard to loosen " stuck on the bottom pee"! It was the only one and it didn't have a price, bar code, or anything but, I knew I wanted it as soon as I saw it. They ended up "giving" it to me. It doesn't even have identifying marks on it so I don't know who makes it. I really like it but, the openings on it are close to 5mm. The reason I bought this particular "Deep Shovel" sifter is because it is 4mm between "tongs". I'm just trying to get as much of the little clumps as I can. So........ Bottom line, I like it but, it's only marginally better than my other Shovel. First off, it's a smaller shovel than what I have but, it really hasn't been an issue. Second, I do notice that it does a little better at picking up the small clumps but remember, it's only 1mm difference. If it's too close together you'll never sift out. Third, it seems to stay a little cleaner but, hard to tell since I'm not one to clean it very often. All in all, I do like this shovel and I'm using it now and will probably continue using it. FYI, I use Tidy Cat, blue top, red top, normal clumping litter. UPDATE: Well, I broke the "solid core handle" the other day. So sad too because I felt I didn't have all my "tools". When I first started using this scooper I only saw a small improvement but, my eyes were opened a little wider when I didn't have it anymore. I had to resort to my old scoop which I used to like OK. What was I thinking?? Anyway, that's how good this scooper is. My rating just went to 5 based on 5-6 months experience with it, based on the scooper itself. I almost didn't give it the extra star because, well, it broke. But, since the seller completely stands behind this product, I know that it will be replaced if defective. The seller was quick to respond and within 2 days I had a new scoop. You can't ask for better than that. Also, I've been better at cleaning the litter box mainly because if you catch clumps early on, you don't have to worry about the little pieces as much.
