The giant Saturn V consisted of three main stages, was 110 meters (361 ft) high and weighed 3,000 tons. It could carry a payload of 50 tons and reach a speed of 11.2 km/second (25050 mph). The 394,000 km ( 244,800 mile) journey to the moon took 72 hours. After achieving low Earth Orbit, the upper assembly with the Apollo Capsule received a final push from the third stage rocket thrusters to achieve the speed required for its flight to the moon. Later the Apollo module broke away from the rocket, turned and pulled the Lunar Module from its protective covering. Coupled together like this, the combination eventually reached the Moon and entered Lunar orbit. After several Lunar orbits the Lunar Module with the astronauts N. Armstrong and E. Aldrin on board separated from the Command Module in which only the astronaut M. Collins remained. With two firings of the retro rockets the Lunar Module commenced its final approach into the Sea of Tranquillity . This historic event will be remembered for eternity. Does it come apart into modules and rocket stages?** A: Yes. All of the stages fit together with bayonet-style fittings. I had this model as a kid and I played with it a lot and I broke all of the connecting tabs. You have to handle it carefully. There's even a lunar module inside the third stage with hinged legs. The command module can be docked with the LM and the upper stage of the LM also separates, so you can simulate an entire mission. **Q: do you need two paint it?** A: Yes, the parts are molded mostly in white, so two get the black markings and other details you do need to paint it. **Q: what kind of material is the rocket made of** A: This is plastic model kit. Required assembly and painting. Glue and paints are not included **Q: What kind of paint is best to use on a model like this one?** A: Any of the commonly available model paints like Testors or Humbrol work perfectly. The answer above/below about spraying the paint is a good one for a better finish. The challenge on this model is masking off the areas you don't want painted. If you are not a regular modeler with a hobby spray gun, you can use the spray enamel for plastics found at Home Depot or Lowe's. Much cheaper than the Testors spray cans and works just as well if you find a brand with a fine spray.
