Being a positive displacement pump, it would move the same amount of water regardless of the back pressure it is pumping against. This means that if the pump is running and the hose outlet is closed with a valve on the shower head, the water still has to go somewhere, so the weakest point will fail (leak), e.g. the sealing gasket, the hose, or the pump diaphragm. If the weakest point happened to be the shower head immediately upstream of the valve, shrapnel from the resultant explosion, or being struck by the flailing hose, particularly if fitted with a metal ferrule or fitting, could cause a serious injury.The manufacturer would have assumed that the switch on the pump would be within reach during use, since the hose to the shower head is only 6.5' long. Incorporating a switch on the shower head would add significant cost, utility, and reliability issues to the product.
