It doesn't cake, it stays on, goes on smooth (I use a brush now but used the sponge also for years before). I specifically use this now over foundation, however, again, for years I used it without foundation as well. You can also wet the sponge and apply with a damp application to have a different effect. Extremely preferable powder, especially for the price.
