## Overview

TotalBoat Marine Topside Boat Paint Primer is a premium one-part marine primer designed for above-waterline surfaces. It offers exceptional coverage with just one coat, dries fast within 60-90 minutes, and is compatible with all 1- and 2-part polyurethane and enamel topside paints. Suitable for fiberglass, wood, gelcoat, and previously painted surfaces, this chromate- and lead-free primer ensures a durable, flexible base that prevents peeling and lifting. Available in white and gray, it supports brush, roller, or spray application, making it the go-to choice for millennial boat owners seeking professional results with minimal effort.

## Description

To ensure the topside paint on your boat adheres well and won't lift or peel, apply TotalBoat Topside Primer first. This one-part premium marine undercoat is compatible with all 1- and 2-part polyurethane and enamel topside paints. Its high-solids formula flows easily, requires only one coat, dries quickly, and is easy to sand. Perfect for priming decks and hulls above the waterline before applying a topside hull paint, such as Total Boat Wet Edge, or a non-skid marine deck paint, such as TotalBoat Total Tread. Topside Primer is easy to apply by brushing, rolling, or spraying on properly prepared wood, fiberglass, gel coat and previously painted surfaces in good condition. Because of the high solids content, it's important to stir this primer for a full five minutes before applying, to ensure it's mixed thoroughly. If needed, thin with TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 when brushing, and xylene when spraying. As for application tools, we recommend the following: Brush Application - natural bristle brush; Roller Application - 1/8" solvent-safe foam roller cover; Spray Application - 1.1mm spray tip. Most applications will require only one coat. It's not necessary to achieve full hide from Topside Primer, and additional coats should not be applied to achieve full hide. It's more important to have a thin, consistent coat. If a second coat is needed, sand lightly with 220-grit sandpaper and remove any sanding residue with a clean, dry lint-free rag or vacuum. Choose white or gray in quart or gallon sizes. TotalBoat Topside Paint Primer provides excellent coverage, requires fewer coats, dries faster, and is more flexible than other one-part marine-grade primers. Compare to Rustoleum Marine Paint Primer, Pettit Easypoxy Topside Paint Undercoater and Interlux Pre-Kote Primer. All TotalBoat products are formulated to provide great value and great results. 100% made in the USA.

Review: Definitely an improvement - Repainted my pretty slippery topside paint. Satisfied with results and have gotten compliments. Generally followed manufacturer’s instructions. Biggest pain was taping. I was fortunate to have a good weather window. But still did it in stages, mostly to keep my dog from walking in it when it wasn’t dry. Primer dries quickly. First coat takes awhile to dry. Covers fairly well. Second coat dries much faster but still tried to avoid walking on it for a bit. My advise is to keep stirring/mixing it, in the can and even in the tray. I started off using a 6” foam roller but found that it didn’t spread the grit very well. I found that l had much better results with that when l switched to a 1/4” nap “regular” roller. Just my opinion. My deck already had a tannish color so l chose to go with the sand color. I think it looks nice but my only real concern with it will be keeping it clean. In that regard for the places where we (dirty dog feet) board amidships l have decided to put down some foam decking. desertcart carries different choices but l elected to use the Sailrite offering. Haven’t put it down yet but it’s on the list. I’m also putting some in the cockpit in front of the companionway. All in all, so far l am satisfied.
Review: Top quality paint - Great product. Nice professional finish . We used it in our Rv and this top quality paint

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Would i have to add a thinner to brush it on smoother?**
A: I bought the thinner and did NOT need it for a smooth and shiny application. It is a slow cure/dry process and self levels pretty nicely.

**Q: Can I use this primer and the topside paint on the hull of a wood and canvas canoe?**
A: No. You'll need a flexible paint. Contact TotalBoat and ask if there is an additive you could use. The Automotive world has such an additive for painting the flexible bumper covers with enamel.

**Q: Can this product be used on concrete?**
A: It probably can, although I would probably choose a product that was intended for concrete

**Q: Can it be used on bare cast iron?**
A: I really don't know but I would imagine that it would. We used it on bare treadplate and it worked very well - even better than I expected. After one year of heavy use, it still looks good.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ best primer
*by K***. on February 9, 2025*

after reading some negative reviews i contacted the distributor to find out about the product. with that conversation i decided to buy the primer, paint and thinner. i did 2 test spots with the paint and primer to make sure it performed as it should. The paint took about 15 hours to dry and the primer only a couple hrs. I have a 16 ft center console i am painting the inside , by the time i was finished the the beginning was dry to touch. The primer is thinner than the paint so i choose not to thin it out. i rolled a thin coat with a foam roller coverage was good with one coat but will likely do a quick 2nd coat just to be safe. do worry about the negative reviews, follow the directions and you will have no problems. i have my garage heated to about 68 degrees also
