It's about 3/4 of an inch high - about 1/2 the height of a golf ball. There is no outer framing, after time it will start to curl up on the edges. This is not a "driving range" quality mat. Very light weight and flimsey. This is NOT for a serious adult golfer. Fine for kids to play on or to teach a beginner. They are very loose with the word "premium" in the description. Will probably hold up better if used inside. Mine is outside and the weather, especially rain takes a toll on the foam rubber padding. the hitting side is ok, but mat does curl as the backing wears. The picture makes it look like it has a stable base - it does not. It;s just "astro turf" glued to foam rubber. As disappointed as I am with my purchase, I have to admit it's not a bad value for the price - personally, I would rather pay more for a commercial grade product that will last longer and hold up better. **Q: does the matt fold or roll for travel in a car?** A: Yes, you can roll it up. I wouldn’t leave it rolled up for days at a time, however, since it can take some time (and heat) to lay back flat. But for a car trip, you’re fine. **Q: Anyone ever match this w/ softer ‘strip’ mat like real feel to soften hits, enable swinging down, & prevent injury? thus diy, full size mat?** A: No, but this mat is soft - too soft in my opinion. It's foam rubber underneath. You can easily strike down on the ball without pain. Naturally, the hitting surface does wear down on the hitting area.
