The trash side is near impossible to do that for obvious reasons: trash = moisture and in general, kitchen garbage! The feet keep it planted on the floor resisting sliding, it's shape makes it easy to tuck out of the way yet be accessible and it looks good. It really does, it's a good looking trash can that doesn't stick out because of size. It blends. Function of the foot pedal opening the top has been flawless, completly perfect for 5 1/2 years. The fact that the plastic can on the inside has holes in it,so when you put a bag in you don't have to fight the air pressure to get the bag to fill properly. All the little details of thought they put into their trash cansis great (for a hefty price). And I was using a brown grocery bag for recycling cause I did not have room for two cans or a larger one. So when I moved into a house I thought 'hah, no more brown bagging it!'. But honestly, even though I have a larger kitchen now, why would I want to have 2 garbage cans, so I looked into this unit. At first I was thinking, 'hmmmm, 5.3 gallons, can I live with that? Will that be enough?'. Well, it is. Yes they are smaller bags. Yes, I'm making more trips to the outside garbage can. But who cares! it's only about 40 feet walking distance. It's only once or twice a week. It's like a whole 5 minutes per week out of my life (probably more like 2), but I get a sleek elegant solution for both trash and recycle.
