Review: Fast, good for sustained use and compatible with ipad Pro 2018 & iMac 2020 - Are you finding researching a new SSD a complete minefield? Theres so many out there and I didn't know what to buy. I had 3 questions that I had to answer to come to my decision. Spoiler...they are not all equal! 1. Q: is it compatible with my iMac 2020 and iPad Pro 2018? (I'd read loads about compatibility issues and even contacted SanDisk who wouldn't commit to a clear answer). A: so far it works well with both, but see the speed results below. 2. Q: what speed does it give in real life? (I wanted to have around 1000 MBPS read and write speed even after sustained use). A: I did a Speedtest (Black Magic) through the Mac and it's giving approx. 950 MBPS read and write via the iMacs TB3 and USB port, which I'm very happy with. Remember, this is not a TB3 SSD. To get the full-rated 2000 MBps you'd need to use this with a USB 3.2 X2 port which my 2020 Mac doesn't have. Speed when connected to iPad? I'm not sure yet, but I'll revise this once I've worked it out. It's very decent though. 3. Q: why this particular SSD if you can't get the full speed out of it anyway? A1: it's fast enough for my needs right now, but it's heavily future proofed for when speedier ports become available on Macs or iPads. A2: it out performed similarly priced drives (Samsung T7, T5, Crucial X8, LaCie Rugged) and held its own against more expensive drives like Samsung X5, LaCie Rugged Pro, WD Black) with regards to speed and throttling, even after sustained use when transferring big files. (Throttling due to heat is a problem with many SSDs and claimed headline speeds aren't achieved in real life due to this). A3: it's small, seems durable for travelling and has no sharp edges to scratch other equipment. It comes with a USB-C to USB-C and a USB-C to USB-A cable. Both are a good length (approx. 30cm) for placement behind an iMac. A4: Its got a 5 year warranty. My question was… Should I go for the Extreme V2 (non-Pro version) rated at 1000 MBPS and save myself £45? The reviews are coming up decent as well for that one. Not quite as fast over sustained use, (approximately 800-ish), but if you don't ever see yourself ever getting a USB3.2 X2 machine, that would be my second choice.
Review: Impressive - Compared to burning DVDs or using USB thumb drives of various qualities that range from slow to glacial, this SanDisk SSD, at a capability of 2000 MB/s, really makes backups a breeze. It took only a few minutes to backup 32 Gigs of data of pdf, mp3, mp4, etc. By default, users will connect directly to a USB port on their computer. However, connected by a USB 3 extension cable of only 2-metres that I employ, so as not to damage USB ports my main computer, that works fine for USB thumb drives or a webcam, it is a definite no-no for this USB drive: Directories will not build, files will not copy . . . Via a direct connection, everything works as it is supposed to work. Not knowing this, I was a heartbeat away from sending it back as hopelessly erratic in its operation, to be of any use :-)

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Hi, my new extreme v2 1050mb/s is only getting 40-100mb/s . why? it's on usb 3.2 gen 1 (the old usb 3.0).**
A: To clarify, the speed you can transfer files to and from this drive depends on the read/write speeds of the drive you are transferring from. If your pc storage drive has a read speed of 250 mb/s then that's the speed the files will transfer even though the USB drive will write faster it can't get the data off of the pc storage drive fast enough. Hope this helps a little bit.

**Q: Has the 2TB Pro 1050mb drive password protection?**
A: Dear Cath Harrison,

My name is Shira from SanDisk Customer Care.

I would like to inform you that the drive will have password 3rd party application on it pre-installed.

You may contact us via our support email: english_support@sandisk.com and provide us with the date of this post.

**Q: With apples camera (usb cable) can i use this drive with just a charging cable? as currently have to use a powered usb hub with a drive.**
A: The Sandisk Drive draws it's power and communication (Files) through a single USB-C Cable. It depends whether the Apple camera's connection can output enough power to run the Drive. Do you use the Charging cable to transfer Data as well as charge the Camera ? If it's just for charging i'd think it's not going to work. I personally would send an Email to Sandisk & Apple to enquire if it's possible

**Q: Will this work for the Dashcam in my Tesla?**
A: I use it on a 2016 Mac book pro,,,, it works well, if you back to this ssd through time machine it will auto format the drive to Mac format the first time you use it.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Superb SSD’s for Blackmagic Cinema Cameras.
*by M***. on 1 February 2025*

I’ve been using the SanDisk SSD’s for a while now with Blackmagic Designs 6K and 6K Pro Cinema Cameras. They’ve performed flawlessly on every shoot so far. I always shoot BRAW these days and though I’ll rarely shoot at 3:1 compression, I tend to shoot all my interviews at 6K with 5:1 compression. I’ve never had a dropped frame, never had a drive fail (other brands I’ve used have hit these problems after a few hours operation) and the transfer speeds are superb. They’re even thin enough to fit inside the SSD compartment on the SmallRig 6KPro cage. Though they do rattle about. Maybe add a little padding to hold it in place. All in all, I’d highly recommend these as part of your Blackmagic camera kit.
