Review: Good entry-to-mid receiver, IF you don't need 4K/120. - I purchased this after trying and returning the newer RX300A. I wanted a AVR with more power and more audio options than the basic 300A. The V6A has a total power supply of ~360W (vs 250W RX300A) and can deliver about 100W (vs 70W) to any single channel. Paired with a powered sub, this is more than enough to fill your living room with sound so long as you don't keep the volume high enough to cause hearing damage. This unit comes with a multipoint room correction and it basically works without fiddling. It does have a habit of setting decent speakers to "large" which disables crossover to the subwoofer. Minor issue though. The corrected sound is even and clear. Per the specs, only the L/R channels are compatible with 4 ohm speakers, but I've had no issues with running 5.1 with such low impedence speakers. It's hard to find decent speakers that's more than 4 ohms that isn't huge too, so don't worry about blowing up the amp. In terms of installation, so long as you're using banana plugs, it should go smoothly. I had my unit hooked up and ready to go in minutes. The only caveat is that the HDMI ports on this model top out at 21gbps, so it's not going to do uncompressed 4K/120 or 8K/60. I don't have any other equipment in my living room that can push that many frames, so I'm not missing out. That could change, but since the V6A is easily $300 cheaper than other units with similar power output, I feel that's a fair trade. Review: Very customizable - Lots of settings for customization. Manual doesn't come with it, instead everything is online. Good luck if you need to find something on it in the distant future. Other than the online manual, and the complicated manual setup, it sounds pretty good with small bookshelf speakers as long as you have a powered sub to go with it. I'll eventually upgrade my speakers, but for now, the little home-theater-in-a-box speakers I have work well enough. This receiver does a good job of driving them and has room to grow when I'm ready. Yamaha also hasn't saids much to confirm about whether or no these units are affected by the panasonic chipset hdmi 2.1 issues and whether they can be worked around with software or not either. Everyone is simply waiting. **Q: Yamaha announced a program to fix the faulty hdmi 2.1 chips back in may. do these units have the fix?** A: As of November 2021, the unit CANNOT do 4K/120 unless Yamaha offers to swap the motherboard on the unit. It's required with this unit, if you want a sub. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Review *by K***N on March 14, 2024* So far I’ve been very pleased with the unit although I only use it for powering two large front 4 ohm external speakers while listening to music streaming on apps in the TV. Unlike AVs from both Denon (who I believe has the best tech support) and Onkyo that I returned, when I turn on my Sony Bravia TV with settings enabled for eARC, the Yamaha unit does not automatically turn on and subsequently switch sound to the external speakers. Perhaps it’s possible but it’s not something that I wanted. Additionally, I came to learn that both Denon and Onkyo are owned by the same parent company, which may explain their common behavior. However, the Yamaha receiver does automatically switch to the external speakers when I power it on and I am able to control the AVR volume with my TV remote control. Additionally, with the settings I have on the TV and AVR, when I turn off the AVR, the sound automatically switches back to coming from the TV speakers, and the TV does remain on. Again, something I want to happen. In general, I’ve found that these devices are very complicated with their myriad number of settings on both the TV and the AVR, and it can be very challenging to properly set them. I’m retired now but my undergraduate degree is in electrical engineering from an Ivy League school at a time when we used slide rules to do the mathematics. I would say that it’s not easy to learn how to use the devices with eARC. If you only want to improve the TV sound, I'm guessing that's it's a lot simpler to use a sound bar.
