The entire top has a grain to it, each piece individually. I like the look of that because my last table was smooth top with a varnish and it always showed fingerprints, dirt and any dents. This table is more "wood grain" than distressed but whatever you want to label this as, if you want a smooth top table, skip this one. If you have kids and it's going to look "distressed" this is a good buyThe table weight 178 lbs and comes in three boxes. The assembly was not difficult but it seems to be slightly off level, no big deal.
