It extends out 30", so can get to most hard to reach places.I gave this five stars because it works fantastically well in picking up dropped bolts, etc.You may wish to reconsider if you actually have to pick up something that weighs 20 pounds.I tried picking up a 20# metal dumbbell. Fail.I tried picking up a 15# metal dumbbell. Fail.I tried picking up a 10# metal dumbbell. Fail.It's a very nice product. I like it. The reason for the second one was because one day I pulled the magnet out and it came all the way out. Tried to fix it but to no prevail. Picks up nuts, bolts, even my hammer. I am a mechanic in a factory and when I drop stuff it falls into places I cannot go sometimes. This has helped me retrieve many tools and parts. I don't know if it's not tough or if I'm just too rough on it.
