The gap is too large for the sensor to recognize it - won’t heat. **Q: I see that this is just 1 piece? Can the 2 pieces but used seperately? Or are you required to put 2 pieces together into 1 piece?** A: It isn't 2 pieces, they were trying to show you that you had 2 different uses in one piece. One side is the grillings side and the other is flat for pancakes, french toast, grilled cheese. I have used both and love the larger size and it is sturdy cast iron that you will be able to pass down generation after generation. Be sure to follow seasoning instructions they give you. I hope this is of some help. DS **Q: What is the non-stick surface? (Don't care where it is made)** A: It's cast iron! The surface is only non-stick if it is properly seasoned and maintained.
