Hot Dog Girl

not what I expected
To be honest my sister said I should read this book, and I was unsure because I don’t love reading YA. But it was so good and heartfelt. Made me cry more than once. Reading it as a twenty something this was filled with so much nostalgia of trying to make the perfect memories.

This book made me stay awake til 6:30AM
This is hard because I don't usually just gush about a book, it's not useful to people wondering what's going on with it. But at the same time I can't find anything wrong with Hot Dog Girl.In fact I went in with low expectations, since it seemed like it was going to be a YA for teens on the younger side.I was wrong. This is a cute summer movie waiting to happen. A witty, quick, coming of age and understanding the world sort of book. A dive in a small mountain town where you get to know a handful of people through the eyes of Elle (or Lou) and ends up shaking your head because, yeah, her plotting was a mess and she was the only one not realizing it.If there's anything wrong with Hot Dog Girl is that I spent the first chapters confused. "Where's the f/f I was promised? What's this het nonsense happening? Take this boy away."Joke was on me though. Nick is actually a nice character, the slow burn between the girls is so sweet and the author is a master in showing things through narrative that the main character doesn't realize, but the reader, does. You'll soon catch up on who's in love, who has more depth than you'd thought and then ask: when will Elle catch up?If you're looking for a sweet and amazingly cute love story. If you love the ups and downs of teen drama with bits of real life emotions going on, this is it. This is a book about Elouise trying to make the perfect summer memory: hooking up with handsome boy, finding a cute girl for her best friend, saving the park she works at and, probably, world domination if you'd let her.And I hope you fall in love with it, just like I did.Oh, also? Jennifer Dugan is a most talented author, there's not a wasted paragraph. Every sentence is a joy. Quick, funny, insightful and believable. I really hope her future involves a hundred more f/f books, she just blew all my expectations up.

I ADORED this book
I thought this book was perfect! When I was a teenager, I always wanted to work at a theme park. I always thought the workers looked so cool. I loved getting a "behind the scenes" view of this job. I also thought the book had just enough drama and just enough heart. All the threads were tied up nicely at the end and I was so happy with it. I highly recommend!

Solid
Adored the father and daughter dynamic. A solid read. The pacing was pretty spot on for my taste, so it was enjoyable in that sense and the growing romance in the book was nice.

Pretty impressive!
I have to say, I was pretty impress by it and I love how it turned out! Love is such a dangerous game but once you know how precious and important it is, you will never want to let it go. This was cute, tad funny, and beautiful ending! I truly dig this a lot. It is very teen angst but didn’t stop me reading...IT IS WELL WRITTEN! I can’t wait for her to do more!!! Thank you for this book, it made me giggle and happy!!!

Summer love
This book turned out better than I thought. Although I did enjoy Verona comics better. I enjoyed the build up of the storyline, could feel Lou’s confusing and her realization that everything she ever wanted was right in front of her.

Grammar problems already?
I get to page 2 in my reading and a sentence like this pops up, “But yeah, I think I can conclusively say that frantically searching Target for extra-long twin bedsheets while freaking out about what to major in does not an epic summer make.” Great readers catch the small things like that. Anyway it’s not only in my copy of the book but also in the Amazon excerpt...Someone might want to fix that.

Perfect summer YA read!
If you're looking to read a fun summer YA romance, then look no further than Hot Dog Girl! This book was enjoyable from start to finish! Quirky and hot-mess Lou makes for a likable protagonist, but all the other characters are relatable as well. I laughed out loud while reading and quickly finished the book so I can hand it to my students to enjoy as well. I look forward to more books by this author!

Fun
This book was so much fun!It was joy, and it was exactly what I needed after a tense day. It’s cliche, very teen, but also hard to put down.

Very fun novel!
This is a delightful novel of summer love and theme parks. The beginning was a little slow-going and I worried it would be too much like the film Adventureland, but it blossomed beautifully into its own story.

Great title
How could you not like a book named Hot Dog Girl.Lou is spending her second summer dressed up as a hot dog, entertaining all the kiddies at the amusement park in her home town. She is wanting to have a relationship with her crush Nick who is a diver at the park, but he already has a girlfriend, so she enlists her bestest friend for forever Seely to help her by pretending to be in a relationship so Nick will notice her more. And Lou's Mom deserted her and her Dad many years ago, so there is a lot going on in her life. When she discovers the park will be closing forever at the end of the summer, she has a plan.Nice story, nice group of friends and adults and fun was had by all, with the hot dog girl.

A cute coming out tale for the younger end of the YA demographic
A massively cute and summery tale.To be honest it took a lot to get me into the flow of this novel. Mainly due to the tone of ‘Hot Dog Girl.’ It felt like it was geared towards the younger end of the YA market. The language, dialogue, and attitudes of the cast felt immature and I frequently got bored and put the book down while getting through the first two-thirds of the novel. In fact, I read another four books while getting over this hump. I also think some pacing issues added to this. It took so long to get to the point, or for interesting things to happen. Not to say this was badly written or structured poorly, it wasn’t. Once the story got its legs ‘Hot Dog Girl’ was truly endearing. I cried, I laughed, the last section of the story had me completely rapt. The rest of the time it was like I had that frustrated patience you get when young children in your care are around and just babbling non-stop and you’re pretending that you are interested in whatever short-attention-span thing they are carrying on about, but internally you are just praying for the torture to end. That’s what the majority of ‘Hot Dog Girl’ was for me.Lou as a protagonist is immature, not very self-aware, doesn’t listen, and schemes like a twelve year old girl to get her own way. Living in her head was a special place in hell for me. But it was lovely to see her grow and mature by the end of the novel… but not something I want to relive anytime soon.Seeley, to counter Lou, was stoic, and to be honest I didn’t feel all that interesting. So too was the other love interest in this triangle: the diving pirate, Nick. The only character of interest was antagonist Jessa, though she was painted as ‘miss perfect’ that can usually come off as a flat character, she managed to have layers and a bit of sass that kept me engaged with the story. The plot did feel very simple, and as soon as the inciting incident kicked in, I predicted the ending very easily. Jennifer Duggan’s writing style is effortless, and I would love to read something else of hers without such an immature tone to see if I enjoy her books more. It is glaringly obvious I am not the target demographic for ‘Hot Dog Girl,’ but considering I usually enjoy other fare for this target market, I was surprised at my reaction to this story. The bisexual and lesbian representation is adorable. It was a joy to read differing sexual orientations in an environment of love and acceptance, like it is commonplace; and how the characters sexual orientation is not the main character trait, but merely an aside… as it is in real life. The romance is like fairy floss, which in the setting of an amusement park, felt apt. I just wish there was some more complexity for the plot, characters, a more mature tone fit for the age of the protagonist, and the inciting incident happened earlier in the novel to kick the pace of the novel from the first or second chapter.‘Hot Dog Girl’ even with the issues I had over my reading experience has wormed its way into my heart. I’d recommend it to those who crave bisexual rep, love Sapphic romances, or those younger YA readers looking for a cute romance.
