A blanket usually sits between the countertop piece and the table frame to insulate, and you can put anything from your legs to your whole body in and enjoy the warm air. You can watch TV, read a book, use a laptop, have a meal, just relax, or even cook on it, and so especially for apartments or other small dwellings, it's an excellent and comfortable space saver. Combine at least your seating, coffee table, and dining table all into one and you realize how silly all of these things are when separate. You could even put an entire desktop computer on it, if the case was small enough. Even if you live in a larger place, it still has the additional benefits of being incredibly comfortable, especially during the wintertime. Just got home from walking around when it's cold out? Kotatsu. Just got out of the shower, cold, and need to dry off? Kotatsu. Need to keep your thermostat low to save money on heating? Kotatsu. I grew up trying to do that in particular by using space heaters, as electricity was cheaper than oil, but a kotatsu would have been a much better and more efficient purchase than trying to warm up an entire room in order to sit in a chair.This kotatsu model comes in two sizes: a square ~2.5ft (75cm) version, SUGSGK-75BK, and this one, SUGSGK-105BK, which adds an extra foot or so to make it rectangular. I was debating the sizes of the two, how they would fit multiple people, what size blankets would work, etc, and decided on the larger size. The description says this can seat 5-6 people, and it can, but if you want room to stretch out, this is not too big for 2-3 people. I also think it may be more comfortable for an American audience, where people tend to have different standards for "personal space", and you can have two or maybe even three people sitting on the long end without their legs all running into each other. If you want an idea as to its dimensions without blocking it out in your living room, it's about the size of two coffee tables put together with their long sides facing.Unpacking is a little tough because it's boxes inside boxes inside boxes. Unfortunately a small piece of the bottom plastic trim snapped off when unboxing it, but since it is wedged between two pieces of plastic I could place it back in and it fits snugly. This kotatsu is a pretty standard design: you have a plastic and wood 'frame' with the heater mounted underneath, and a tabletop piece that sandwiches the blanket between itself and the frame. There are plastic legs that attach with included bolts and either a hex wrench (provided) or a screwdriver, and plastic feet that slide onto the legs, and assembly is finished. One side of the tabletop is black and the other is white, with a subtle speckled 'grain' pattern. I was worried about the kotatsu feeling somewhat cheap as it looked somewhat plastic-y, but despite this it's very solid, the tabletop looks surprisingly nice, and while you can shift the whole table around if you want to move it, the tabletop stays put incredibly well and is not 'tippy'. The rectangular version has plenty of space, enough that I feel totally comfortable having liquids and electronics on it at the same time. I plan on making hot pot and cooking on it too. A good place to put it is in front of a couch, so that while sitting there you can have a coffee table and foot warmer, and when sitting in front of the kotatsu you can wedge a pillow between you and the cushions to have a nice backrest. It's low enough to the ground that it doesn't block anything in front of it, so this is a good thing to do if you don't want to completely abandon the traditional western living room.Now that I've talked about the table part, let's talk about heat. The heater is a 500W, 120V model, so there is no need for any loud, bulky, and expensive step-down transformer. It's not generally recommended to use Japanese 100V kotatsu in the 120V US, as they'll run hot and are probably some sort of electrical hazard. This kotatsu is cheap enough that there's really no reason to bother with anything else. The heater has a reasonably long cord (2.6m, so about 8.5ft), but you may need to use a power strip or extension cord (a 14 or 16 gauge cord should be OK for the latter). Note that it's a two-prong cord. Even accounting for the voltage difference, this should be a stronger heater than in 300W Japanese models (3A vs 4.2A), so don't crank it up to 'high' right out of the box! A little below the midpoint is my favored heat setting. The dial is unfortunately not on the cord but on the side of the heater itself (one of the long sides, where the cord attaches), but is easy to reach for once you get a good feel for its position. There is no on-off switch, so I've ordered a  Etekcity Wireless Remote Control Electrical Outlet Switch for Household Appliances (Learning Code, 1Rx-1Tx)  so that I can turn it on and off at the touch of a remote button. It hasn't shown up, but I think it should be a good fit. Running this on carpet should be absolutely fine, as it doesn't heat up very much and the heater is far from the ground.For blankets, I've used a queen size medium weight comforter, and it works well enough but is a little shorter than I'd like, and perhaps not as insulating. If you want to purchase some linens for this, I'd recommend a light and then a heavier weight king size comforter. I would not recommend buying an import kotatsugake off Amazon, as they're a couple hundred dollars - if you can't get one locally, buy a nice-looking comforter or two and save your money. The heater is a little warm on your legs if you're directly underneath it when it turns on, but if your insulation is good enough, it'll turn on less frequently and you won't feel like you're laying under a broiler. For seating, I just use regular throw or bed pillows: there are zaisu or similar style floor seats on Amazon, but I don't find them entirely necessary.I think that about covers it. I'd love to see a different design featuring a longer cord with on/off switch and heat selection, but this is still the best deal for a kotatsu in the US. This is definitely a great way to save space, stay warm, and have an interesting, relaxing place to do just about anything. How often do you see furniture described as a "place"? It doesn't come with a blanket, but a queen size comforter does perfectly fine. It kept us warm for the rest of the winter, but suddenly one day it just stopped working. The night before it was heating and then when we woke up to drink coffee, it didn't turn on at all. We contacted the seller for some possible trouble shooting and they responded swiftly and offered to replace the kotatsu.I will also say that it is a rectangular shape which I enjoy because it allows more people to sit at it at any given time and it also allows you to sit further away from the heating element just incase you just want to get a bit warm. The only complaint that I have is there's no on off switch. You can only turn it down to low and to turn it off you have to unplug it, but we haven't found it inconvenient enough to really be a deal breaker. Absolutely love this kotatsu, enjoyed it to the very last bit! That reviewer covered nearly everything, but I did want to note something else. Despite the dimensions provided, I was worried that the kotatsu would actually be square because of the image. Just want to confirm that it definitely is rectangular and the proper dimensions. I went off the previous reviewer's suggestion and purchased a king size comforter. I think it is a really good size. Queen also fits, but when you have a few people under it the insulation gets lost some. King has a bit extra slack so it stays super insulated.
