As others have said, you will need to hand fit it to your situation. It will not simply drop in the slot. If it does, then something is wrong. It took about 30 minutes of filing to get a snug fit. I did it while I watched TV. If you are not comfortable filing and shaping metal, this is not the product for you. If you know what you're doing or you are capable of some light research, you will be good to go. Review: Hand fitting is normal - I see reviews about too much hand fitting and folks installing with a sledge hammer, neither is right. I want a dove tail blank that needs to be hand fitted, it ain't hard y'all. Take a triangle file grind one side flat on a belt grinder, use the flat side against the top of the underside of the plug and take off a little at a time on both angles where it fits in the barrel( the blank not the barrel). It helps to have calipers to measure both the male and the female dovetail, about .002*.003 interference is what you are going after. It should then install with light taps of a brass punch and a hammer. This was long enough to fill the dovetail on my Pedersoli octagon barrel on 45/70 Rolling Block rifle. The top is slightly rounded like in the picture which gives it a nice appearance. I chose the Lyman over the Marble's because I read the Lyman is finished nicer. **Q: Will this fit the Winchester model 1886 (new rifle)?** A: If it has a standard 3/8" dovetail slot, it should fit. Some filing might be required, but it is better to be snug than loose (easy to take metal off, but hard to put metal back). I installed one on a Marlin 1894 with no filing; it was tight, and took a heavy brass punch and hammer, but it's in there for good. **Q: Will this work on the rear sight dovetail on a Ruger 10/22?** A: Yes, it will work, but, generally, most all slot blanks & also replacement rear sights require some fitting, usually in the form of some gentle filing on its bottom surface. Slot blanks should NOT be a slip fit, but should be able to be tapped firmly into place with a brass, or preferably, a hard nylon drift punch (to avoid marring or battering) and a hammer. It is always good practice to remove the action/barrel from the stock and clamp it firmly in a padded vice, before attempting to fit the slot blank. **Q: Just ordered a Skinner winged peep. Will this fit a Marlin 1894? or should I get this from Skinner also?** A: If it's like the 3/8" dovetail on a marlin 336 rear sight it will fit but needs at least 1/16" ground off to match the barrel profile. Without that it just looks like something you put there that happen to fit the slot.
