Review: A great pencil for general use - This is a fantastic pencil for general use. The graphite doesn't smear as much as other pencils, and if you are left-handed, this is a plus. The graphite also erases well. I've been using a pentel hi-polymer eraser with it.
Review: Maybe The Best Japanese Pencil for the Price - I REALLY like these pencils. They write very smoothly and are a great price. The fit and finish is excellent and they sharpen very smoothly with a Mitsubishi KH20. This is the third Mitsubishi Pencil I have tried; it competes well against the 9850 and the Hi Uni. I bought these pencils because I wanted an eraserless smoothly capped 9850, keeping the high fit and finish, dark line, and point retention. It performs almost identically to the 9850. I wanted this pencil to be a cheaper Hi Uni B but in HB while not sacrificing much, it has that in spades. One minor knock I do have against this pencil is the wood. The Hi Uni's are top shelf incense cedar (you pay for it), the 9850 is I believe cedar but of a lesser quality, and the 9000 is of a different species entirely. It may be some type of fir. If you want to get the most of these pencils I HIGHLY recommend getting a burr sharpener, as it will sharpen the softer wood much better than a quickly dulled blade sharpener. With my KH20 I don't even notice the lesser wood quality visibly or in use. Get one, do yourself a favor. If you want to know what the hubbub is around premium Japanese drawing/writing pencils - this is a great place to start.

**Q: are these made in japan?**
A: Nowhere on the actual pencil does it say made in Japan.  But on the back of the box, it simply reads, Japan.  The great quality of these pencils would indicate that they are made in Japan.

**Q: Does this pencil say "made by elaborate process" on the other side?**
A: Yes. I have 4 different types of Mitsubishi pencils, and this is the only one that has that label.

**Q: Is this a dozen? The number of pencils in the box doesn't appear to be listed.**

These are different from the standard #2 pencils you used in school. These are extremely smooth when writing on paper. I recommend them strongly if you’re into quality writing implements.
