Even the sun was a female deity.” The Birch tree is often regarded as a goddess tree, a symbol of renewal and protection—a tree of inception and new beginnings. During Franco’s dictatorship in Spain a battalion called the Blue Division went to Latvia to fight against Stalin’s Communism. One of the protagonists, a Spanish soldier (sent to avoid prison in Spain) falls in love with a Latvian girl. Their romance develops in the circumstances and feelings of the turbulent Europe. Romance is only the paradigm in the forces that join people in these very dramatic moments of change in their lives. This is the story of two sisters and their father. One escapes from the war in Latvia and goes to Spain and the other travels to live in Canada. The father pays the consequences of the war and is sent to Siberia.
