The lid pops up when the push button is pressed. In my opinion the plastic lid and button feel flimsy but that may be because my previous kettle had a sturdy removable metal lid. There is a plastic "viewing panel" on one side to see how much water is inside. The on/off button at the base of kettle has a satisfying clunky click and seems sturdy enough. The kettle boils pretty quickly but other family members have commented on it being noisy. It is so I just leave the room!
