Review: High quality heat mats for seed starting. - I am very happy with these heat mats. I am controlling these mats with a Vivosun timer. The combination works flawlessly. The temperature control is acceptable and with the controller, very adjustable. They do not heat quickly. For me, that is ideal. They do not draw a lot of power while warming, and seem to not take much electricity to maintain the temperature once it reaches the setpoint. That is excellent. I have used Vivosun heat mats and timers in the past and expected them to still be high quality. That is exactly what I found. Very easy to use. I have never had any problems with them and they get water all over them almost constantly with timed watering. No issues at all. I keep the timers elevated out of the water spray, so the critical connections always stay dry. I am a fan of Vivosun products and will purchase them in the future.

**Q: So just to be clear this is not ul approved and has not safety features , fuses or overheating safety? correct**
A: I just received two of these heating mats. 
Yes! It is marked on each mat "UL approved"

**Q: Can i put this mat in between dirt**
A: Yes, it's waterproof.

**Q: Is it safe to plug it in indoors and use it outdoors?**
A: You can use it indoors.  A regular heating pad you buy at a drug store gets much warmer, so ya it's safe.

**Q: Is the plug safe for outdoor use?**
A: if you mean can rain get in it, the answer would be no.  However, i have this in use in my outdoor greenhouse, though covered by greenhouse plastic.  if you are concerned about the weather, i found this thing at Home Depot by the Christmas lights.  it is a hard plastic tube, that has a soft rubber on the ends, and is sliced in half lengthwise.  you can put a plug down the middle, and close the tube around it making it pretty water tight.  i bought several for areas around my farm with plugs that are outdoors.  This would work if you are plugging into an extension cord.  (My friend uses her heat mats on her covered patio.  not a concern there either.  but, if exposed to rainfall, I suggest looking for that cord cover i described above.  (It is sturdy.  not flimsy.)
