I had thought of the hourglass idea years ago and finally was ready to execute. After reading some of the reviews I went with this one since others had used it for the same purpose. Pointers if you're wanting to use this for the same purpose - it helps to have 2 people. And after the first try (using a tiny funnel) wasn't going so well I used a sifter to separate the finer ashes. This helps tremendously. You will still need a toothpick to help push the ashes through the funnel but the sifter was a game changer. Doing all 3 hourglasses took around an hour. All worth it.
