An extra bonus was the fact that the vents had anti-bug louvers to prevent the entry of unwanted pests. The actual rear flanged extension was not exactly 8" x 8" however. It was more like 8" high x 8-1/2" wide, so the rough opening that was required was closer to 8-1/4" by 9-1/4", but it created no problem for me as I always check needed hole sizes twice prior to cutting. Easy to directly install square drive screws in the corners without pre-drilling too The quality, price and overall value can't be beat. Love this product and would certainly purchase it again for similar future projects.

**Q: Would this work for a garage door & how is  would it be supported ?**
A: I added this to my shed by cutting a 9x8" rectangular hole, and trimming the back of the vent with a Dremel because a stud blocked part of the hole. Before attaching to the shed, I sprayed the front with DEFT Adhesion Promoter so it could later be painted. Pieces of Gorilla Tape covered the four corners until GOOP adhesive on the back had dried. The tape was then removed, and the perimeter sealed with DAP Dynaflex calk. Finally, I carefully painted over the vent and dried calk to match the shed.

The plastic vent is stronger and much thicker than sheet metal, and the small slats keep most bugs out and add overall strength.

**Q: How many square inches of net free area?**
A: From the item photo, it is labeled "21 square inches", which seems like a plausible net free area amount given the overall roughly 10x10 inch outer dimensions.

**Q: Is this made of metal or plastic**
A: Plastic

**Q: Does this allow wind to come through it into the building?**
A: I wouldn't say wind, but air flow will come into the building.  We used these in a small shed in the back yard that was getting moldy.  My husband cleaned it, removed the mold, and wanted to have some air flow in the building to resist the mold build up from dampness.  I guess we will find out in the spring if it worked.  I recommend these vents as they were easy to install and look nice.

This is a sturdy vent that I used for exterior cold air intakes for my furnace. The vent themselves have small vertical plastic slits that will keep the mice out. My prior vents had too large of openings that did not work well. As another reviewer said, there is a square rim on the back that the pictures did not show. I used a small saw to remove the rim for my application since the vent needed to sit flat against brick.
