How "tall" bottom rod to top rod?** A: The rod from front to back is aproximately 10 inches lon. the piece that fits in the barrel of the gun as well as the piece that slides over or under the shelf is 4.5 inches long. the height from top to bottom is 2 inches but the center part that grabs the shelf tightens down to 5/8 of an inch so al long as your shelf is thicker than that there will be no problem. It increased the storage space in my gun safe. With that said, these will not work for heavier pistols. Do not even consider buying this if you plan on hanging a loaded M1911 from it. If I had to put a non-scientific weight rating on these, it would be limited to a 30 oz pistol. Overall, I cannot complain considering they were only $2.50 each. Seriously, what do you expect for $2.50? They work as intended and work fine. If you have a pistol with high sights or a thicker barrel, you will have to turn it to the side when sliding it on and ensure there is adequate clearance for the sights before just letting it hang freely. My Browning Buckmark is about the maximum for these, but it is good to know that they do work for .22 cal because a few other reviews claim they will not. Overall, the only real complaint I have is the lack of a maximum weight rating for these in the listing or description. Obviously that would vary with the length of the pistol, but there should be some sort of notice that they are not intended for full sized steel handguns. By full size, I am not talking about the compact polymer pistols that some manufacturers are currently calling full sized.
