## Description

desertcart.com Designed with serious music fans in mind, the Sony D-NF430 CD Walkman lets you listen to your favorite CDs, MP3s, and radio stations in style. The sleek portable player is ideal for listeners who already have extensive music libraries, as it comes with bundled software to burn and play back everything from MP3 to ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus tracks. The latter is an advanced audio compression technology offering multiple bit rates, allowing you to create music compilations tailored to your listening preference. More significantly, a single CD-R/RW disc can store up to 490 ATRAC3plus selections when burned at 48 kbps, thus saving money, time, and storage space. And if you're just starting your digital music collection, don't fret, as the D- NF430 is compatible with Sony's Connect Music store and its vast online music archives. Listeners who want a little more variety in their music can turn to the built-in digital AM/FM tuner, which also offers accurate drift-free tuning of select TV and weather stations. The tuner is ideal for catching a special report on NPR, listening to the ballgame, or receiving a quick 24- hour weather forecast. And switching between those stations is quicker than ever thanks to the 51 station presets, including 30 FM, 10 AM, four weather band, and seven TV presets. The D-NF430 offers a wide array of playback modes (18 in all), ranging from repeat and random play to track programming to bookmarking. The five-direction control key, meanwhile, makes navigation a breeze. The CD Walkman's no slouch from an audio perspective, either, with such features as a parametric equalizer that lets the user set not only the amount (in dB) by which a certain frequency band is boost or cut, but also the width and/or center frequency of the band; Digital Mega Basss sound, which employs digital processing technology to produce rich, deep bass tones with extremely low harmonic distortion; and a two-position Automatic Volume Limiter System (AVLS) that maintains the volume output at levels below the distortion threshold for cleaner sound reproduction. Best of all for joggers and other active users, the D-NF430 offers Sony's skip-free G-Protection technology, which ensures quick recovery from horizontal and vertical shock. Other details include an easy-to-read three-line LCD, multilingual support for LCD text and ID3 tagging, a set of earbud headphones, and an auto-shutoff feature to conserve battery life. The D- NF430, which runs for up to 413 hours on a single AA battery (not included), measures 5-1/2 inches in diameter and 1-1/4 inches tall and is backed by a 90-day warranty on parts and labor. Review: SUPERB SOUND, 1 AA BATTERY, REMOTE, I LOVE IT!!! - Bought this from desertcart and I am very, very pleased! Why? (First, I have owned and still do the 420 model Atrac). I bought this model because of the ONE AA battery, remote, TV, AM FM, Weather and resume. Here are the wonderful reasons I love this: 1) Only uses ONE AA battery! And it will last a long time(I have had it last over 40 hours on MP3! (Suggestion: Go with re-chargable batteries when at home, however on the go, then keep an extra AA battery handy). 2) Receives, TV, AM, FM, Weather, and CD, MP3 all just perfectly. This is the only model that I found with FM, AM, TV and Weather. 3) Resume feature--I listen to a lot of CD Audio books and MP3 Audio books and love the fact that I can turn the player off and a few hours or days later, just turn it on and pick up just where I left off! This is one of the few players with RESUME. 4) Does not skip! I walk around a lot with this in my purse or in a waist pack and it does not skip! Great earphones! 5) Remote is easy to use! 6) Love the easy to use ON button in the center. 7) This is one of the few CD players that the AM works, I love my TALK NET RADIO! 7) The sound quality is so much better than the other MP3/CD cheap models that I had before. (I hear bass and treble sounds on my CD's and MP3's that I did not hear on the cheap models). 8) I also own the DNF420 MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman Portable Compact Disc Player with AM/FM/TV/Weather Digital Tuner, which is the older model and love it as well. (This model does not have a a remote). And since I have loved and still do, my DNF420 Sony Atrac, I knew I would love this model. In fact, I give it a 5 because I love it even more than my Sony Blue Atrac Psyc with AM, FM, Weather, TV. Note that to listen to weather if you are far from a weather station as I am, go outside or near a window and then you can hear it. All in all, I am just thrilled so far with this model. I highly recommend this to anyone who is active, travels or listens to alot of Audio books. To me, this is the very BEST of ALL the CD/MP3 made. I wish I would have bought this first. (Before I wasted my money on 8 cheapie MP3/CD players that did not have resume and had a not that good sound).
Review: Four different issues, One great CD player. - Before getting the DNF430, I owned the DNF420 version and was very happy with its performance. But, there were four different issues with the SONY ATRAC CD player: 1) the player 2) the sonicstage software 3) headphones 4) recording in atrac. The CD player was excellent - it displayed songs, allowed jump from song to song, or album to album. Also, the FM tuning allowed reception inside gyms that broadcast tv shows on FM stations, like CNN and ESPN. Every once in a while, I would watch a CNN breaking story on the gym TV monitor, and to hear the sound, I just flip to the FM pre-set dial, and presto. But, the headphones needed to be replaced with Noise Reduction, over the ear headphones. At the beginning, I was not prepared for the headphone fuss. In the gym, with all the exercising and sweating, the standard headphones did not withstand the daily wear and tear, I am sorry to say. Yet, I was able to overcome this issue. I have dropped the CD player a number of times at the gym, on the treadmill, yet it continues to perform quite well. My critical issues was the sonicstage software. Unknown to me - until purchased and started to use stonicstage, this software was delicate and took a while to learn. "RIPPING" a CD and "BURINING" a CD was relatively new to me. So, I was not prepared to "tolerate" with the learning curve issues surrounding the software. It took me time, and it was frustrating in the begining. When all the tweaking was done, the learning understood - the software, the library, the burning, and the performance worked like a charm. I was able to store over 250 songs onto a single CD. Yet at times, I was skeptical about reaching the quoted 400 songs SONY talks about. Anyway, I also backed-up my music using the sonicstage software, and later restored it. This worked like a charm, too. I was very lucky to have this backup, since my PC system crashes at least once a year. My library and the selections were recovered nicely, thanks to Sony and the restore feature! The ATRAC system featured a slightly different recording than MP3. MP3 was transferable format, while ATRAC was not. I don't thik the MP3 playback also had the descriptive and navigating features during playback mode. So, I stayed with the ATRAC recordings. I am very happy with my CD player, because it performs well, has great sound, and can be stored in my gym bag, and left in my car overnight. The CD player was able handle the COLD and HOT weather temperatures of Northeastern USA. I use the CD player at least three times a week, at the gym, and so far - no problems.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this thing work with external power sources and does it have internal batteries? I appreciate any help.**
A: This CD Player has both external power and internal batteries (1 AA).

**Q: I just wanted to know if this (Sony DNF430) has recording capabilities ?**
A: No

**Q: How do you turn the player off? Is there a button or do you have to unplug it?**
A: It does not have a dedicated power on/off button except a Radio off button. It powers on when a CD is loaded or the play button or radio on button is pressed. You may turn off the radio with the radio off button. It goes to sleeping or stand-by mode after a certain period of time when CD play finishes or radio off button is pressed. But it never bothers me without a dedicated power button. By far it is the best CD player I've ever used. Sadly it has been rolled out and replaced by iPod.

**Q: What happened to the power savings mode? Cannot use the equalizer because I cannot turn off the power mode.Missing.**
A: I don't have the instruction manual, but the answer may be that the area with the three raised dots next to "hold" on the reverse side of the player has the answer. The slider with the dots moves. I discovered this when my player was stuck on "hold" Try moving that to the various positions . Good luck. Love my player!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I like it but it has some problems
*by A***N on January 29, 2008*

Well, I bought this product so I could play my mp3 discs on it on the go other than just on my stereo system, and since the space is only limited by the amount of CDs you can hold. I'm using it as a supplement to my HD mp3 player and stereo system but I'm finding I use it more than those even. While my stereo and HD mp3 player can play mp3s just fine this sometimes has problems. when I was using my mp3 discs I made with windows media player everything seemed to be fine at first. Then, I noticed the cd player would stop for several seconds between tracks and make a crunching sound like the cd was stopping and then spinning again. I thought this was normal. Also, the mp3 discs started skipping at certain spots (the shock protection doesn't seem to work for this) and some wouldn't even play all the time. I tried them on my stereo and computer at the same spots and there was no skipping or anything. So, I started burning mp3 discs using another program and it fixed the crunching sound and the long pause but it still skips in some spots but not as much as before. So, in other words I don't think it handles MP3 discs well with any kind of error on it no matter how small or even discs without errors. I haven't used it much for regular CDs but it seems to play them fine. The sound isn't all that great even with better earbuds and messing with the equilizer trying to make it better. My HD MP3 player and stereo(it's a cheap one BTW) sound quite a bit better. There seems to be a lot of static, fuzz with this player. The battery lasts a long time. I'm using sony rechargeables and get 13 hours of playback, and I'm under estimating quite a bit I think. This is a nice player but just be aware that it's not the best machine that plays mp3s. Edit: The more I use this the more I don't like it. O.K., I realize playing audio CDs work fine. The problem is that it plays mp3 cds horribly, even after trying different software, different file systems and after finally getting it to work without the long pauses in beetween tracks. I reburned many CDs just to get it to work with this thing. It still skips and won't play all mp3 files or it will just play a few. Just when I think it won't skip or stop playing them it does. Like I said none of the options work for this problem. Sometimes it does it in the same spot which could mean that the disc is not right , but I doubt it because my Sony Stereo plays all my mp3 discs just fine, so it's probably not my fault. I don't know if it's because of the power saving technology or what but this is unacceptable for something of this price and the main reason why I bought this unit. I could of just used my old citizen that I got for a few bucks if I just wanted to listen to regular audio cds, and it sounds almost as good. I got a feeling all of these sony cd walkmans of this model(and probably other models too) are the same and it's probably just not mine. That's why I really don't want to waste time and money sending it back and getting it fixed or replaced just for the same thing to happen. I would be interested in hearing what other people that use this mainly for mp3 discs think. Most of the reviews here don't really cover the mp3 aspect. If this worked properly I think it would be even better than those flash or hard drive mp3 players. EDIT: 3-30-08 OK, this is what I found out and why some don't work properly and the problem with the skipping every once in a while. If the file name is too long, there is anything else on the disc including album art or you use an incompatable file system, it won't play it properly even if it appears too at first. It still plays ATRACS smoother than MP3 discs, in other words no half to two second wait between tracks. The problem with ATRAC is it doesn't sound too great even at higher bit rates, and Sony has pretty much dumped the format and Sonic Stage. The MP3 discs work that are made using Sonic Stage but Itunes does it better. Do NOT make a regular data disc of MP3s even if you don't put anything else on it because it probably won't work right, especially if you use one of those free burning programs. Other than that it works great now that I got it figured out and after spending lots of money on discs trying to find a way to get it to work.
