The opening size of the strainer needs to be smaller than the particle size you are trying to filter out. 5 microns is super small and requires and incredibly small mesh size (about 2500 openings per inch, 400 microns is much larger and about 40 mesh which I suspect is the size of this strainer). Think about the paper filters used in drip coffee makers and you will see the size required to keep the grounds out of your cup. Outstanding response. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sturdy -- not as fine a mesh as the super-fine strainers, but well built! *by J***D on February 9, 2021* I got this along with a bunch of super-fine strainers when deciding I wanted a variety of finder meshes (than you find in a standard colendar or strainer) for things like straining out coffee, stews/soups, etc. This isn't nearly as fine as the super-fine strainers you can find elsewhere, so I wouldn't use it for something that requires that like straining the bubbling fat out of a stock. But a well-stocked kitchen should have a variety of strainers of different degrees of fine-ness! Finer meshes (that is, smaller apertures) will tend to filter out ever smaller particles and even thicker liquids to a degree, but they'll also clog more easily and if you're filtering when filling a container, are more likely to fill up and cause a spill.
