The yellow part is made of metal and it is very heavy as well as heavy duty. It does what its supposed to do as far as protecting the phone from falls. I bought this for my son's phone and he drops it about 10 times a day and actually launched it across the room one time and it hit the ground hard. The outer edge is rubbery for extra shock absorbsion. All the buttons and ports are still easily accessible. It has to be actually screwed together around the phone so it will not come apart.
