I stick it in the microwave for 1 minute & 20 seconds, and it heats my up to relax my tight muscles. The material inside (flax, lavender, and rice) is held in four departments, so it doesn't shift to only one end. It also smells really great as is, so I haven't even bothered with trying to use the essential oil packets yet. It doesn't eliminate my headaches, but it lessens some of my pain. I haven't tried it as an "ice pack" yet, but I would expect it to work as it would use the same mechanism that heating uses. It has a light lavender like aroma that doesn't annoy. I think you can switch out the aroma packets if you don't like the one that comes ready to wear. I play tennis, am in my 60s and often have a tight neck after playing a couple sets. This wrap is the perfect remedy for what ails my neck.
