For those of you who haven't seen one up close, the end opposite the handle end has a spring-loaded bolt. Once you drill the holes on the opposite sides of the duct, you remove the wingnut and the handle, then insert that "handle" bolt through the hole from inside the duct. The bolt on the other end pushes flush with the edge of the damper, which allows you to push the other end of the damper over the opposite bolt hole until that bolt is centered over it and can push through.
