I love being able to fill it once and forget it for a while, especially during hectic weeks with hatches and flock shuffling. The way it works is, there is a spring inside. When the cup is light, it allows water to flow in. When the cup is full of water (or dirt), the weight of the cup closes the opening so no water flow. There is a removable cup inside the big cup for easy cleaning however I have found that sometimes its hard to pull out. If too much dirt gets inside, I swirl my finger round in the water to get the dirt up, then turn the cup to the left and let it dump out.I added a video so you can see how well the chickens like it. The pictures to show how I put it on my chicken run. I've had this for probably 5+ months now and it's working out great (Update: 8 months and it still works great!). Occasionally, the water will get some green in it, so I wash it out, but it's really not that difficult. My chicks were hatched in April 2021 and started using this around October (about 6 month old). I only have 2 chickens. It's easy to lift the lid and fill with water when they run out.This is working out WAY BETTER than the other cups I had where their beaks were supposed to hit the yellow ball inside the cup and that would allow water flow, but they didn't (several problems with those). I have not used this one inside the coop, just in the run, but to my knowledge it doesn't leak. I did purchase a smaller one to set up inside their coop, I just haven't gotten around to it yet (right now I put it on a few bricks under a tree outside their run so when I let them roam, they have water. Its working out great!Update: This is my first summer using these and the water gets hot (like it would with any waterer). I live in CA and we've been having multiple days over 100. However, I fill up used water bottles and freeze them, then cut off the plastic (or make a few holes in the bottom) and throw a frozen 12oz bottle into the waterer (fits great!). Then, as it melts, they get more water. It melts slower than just using ice cubes. It even fits a 32oz Gatorade bottle (just can't close the top). This has been helping keep their water cooler longer. I am running out of used water bottles haha and will probably just keep reusing like an ice pack. I only have 2 chickens so it takes them awhile to run out of water.
