    A Dark Powerful Chamber Opera

In the spirit of his work with the Kronos Quartet on such pieces as the Quartets and the “Dracula” soundtrack, Glass offers a one-act dramatic work based on a story by Franz Kafka in this brief but powerfully eloquent form for two singers and string quartet. It’s a grim work, but the libretto is precise, efficient, and filled with subtle character details which are fleshed out with remarkable efficiency by the music. Each scene stands alone yet the whole is knit together by various harmonic and figurative devices, giving an overall sense of mounting tension coupled with emerging personality. Ebrahim’s rich bass-baritone is beautifully suited to the apparently sinister yet ultimately ambiguous role of the Officer, while Bennett’s tenor provides a clear ringing contrast as the Visitor who has been placed in an impossible and mentally agonizing situation. The string quintet plays with both fluid virtuosity and deep commitment under Rafferty’s baton.
