I didn't purchase the recommended cleaner or metal prep. I used a bottle of rustoleum rust stripper and a bunch of nuts and bolts to clean the inside of the metal gas tank. Then I rinsed it with water and let it completely dry. After a couple of days of drying it had formed a thin layer of rust, but as I read, a little rust is good for por-15 work. Por-15 runs like watery paint and coats metal, creating a protective hard layer, preventing metal from oxidation. I think there are 4 main colors of por-15. The container I bought says gray on the label, but it actually is a metallic silver color. I am ok with any color since its inside a gas tank. I followed the directions, and poured a half a cup in, sealed all the holes, and shook it for several minutes to coat all the surfaces inside. Then I emptied the excess back into the por-15 can. I let it dry for a half hour and used a tissue to carefully soak up the excess in the fuel tank without wiping away the newly created layer. (Use latex gloves or other). I waited a while for it to become a hard but slightly tacky surface before I created a second coat. But not too soon to trap the curing process of the first layer. Then several days later after the 2 coat curing process had finished, and most of the smell subsided, I was able to reassemble the machine and give it a test. You can make 1 layer or several layers. I chose 2. The por-15 can is small, but I only used maybe 2-3 tablespoons to make 2 coats in the fuel tank after pouring the excess back. A little bit goes a long way. I still have almost all of the liquid in the can which is awesome. Its been about 1 month now and after several uses of my machine, the inside of the fuel tank still looks new. With the reflective silver coating in the tank, I can now use a flashlight to peer in to see how dirty the fuel is that Im using and see particles settled at the bottom. Hopefully this fuel tank now lasts for many years. It gave a 30 year old very rusty fuel tank and machine new life. My edger with a briggs engine runs excellent. So far its a really great product and Im very happy with it. It was worth the cost despite the size of the can because of how small the amount of liquid is used. It probably could be used on a dozen mower sized gas tanks or a few motorcycle tanks before it runs out. The por-15 can doesn't need to be any larger. I would recommend this product. Review: BEST Tank Sealer - POR15 products need no introducing . This can easily did my 2 gallon Motocycle tank, you'll need to strip and fully de rust the tank first or IT WON'T WORK . Needs serious mixing, the bottom of the can was the separated out part, I tried shaking it a while to no avail so I used an old CLEAN large flat bladed screwdriver to slowly turn and turn it until the colors were fully mixed, takes a goodly long while . Once opened the stuff needs to be used soon so DO NOT OPEN THE CAN UNTIL THE TANK IS DE RUSTED AND YOU'RE READY . I used a medium sized plastic funnel to pour it in then I capped the tank and began rotating it to ensure the mix flows into every corner and crevice ~ this is not a job you can rush . After making sure it had fully coated the inside of the tank I cleaned up the stirring screwdriver and funnel, it's easy to do if the stuff is still wet, once it dries it's *PERMANENT* so watch there you're working as it WILL NOT COME OFF EVER . floor, driveway, clothes, etc. . if the tank you're working on has any pinholes, be sure to tape them up first, this stuff is amazing and plugs BB sized pin holes easily . Don't forget to follow the instructions to the letter and remember to keep tuning and tipping the tank so the mix covers all crevices and the inside of the top too . I polish then wax the tank first so any droplets I might spill are easy to wipe off right away . I also tape around the filler neck with blue painter's tape because I'm extra cautious . I used this product in a 'Hail Mary' to save a 40 year old badly rusted and leaky Motocycle tank, I hope in time I'll find another but fr now it works fine, the ethanol laced fuel doesn't seem to bother it .
