There was so much clay in the ground nothing was breaking up down below like it was suppose too **Q: Is this difficult to mow over or around the lid?** A: Lid plastic I wouldn’t want to put tires on it also the tab to open lid takes approximately 3 to 4 inches of clearance to step on yo open it so I would say more around yes over no **Q: Does it stink when closed?** A: The Doggy Dooley does not have an odor when used properly. I put sand in the very bottom of ours and gravel on top of that with just over a foot above this in empty space before the lid. Once a week you throw an enzyme tablet in the hole and then water it. We water ours every other day. The poo breaks down and then becomes sediment that rinses into the rocks/sand and then leaches into the ground. There's a tablet alternative that is an enzyme powder that can be used. The Doggy Dooley is way more awesome than a crap can etc.... The ground can be tested for functionality by filling the hole with X amount of water.... if it drains out within 24-48 hours, then the hole will leach properly and you should have no problems with odor. Anyone that uses this setup and complains about an odor, must not have set it up properly or dug the hole deep enough.... or have a hole that doesn't leach properly. Not using the correct #of enzyme tablets per amount of Dogs/ volume of poo? I'm sure that there are multiple possibilities..... but I don't have any issues with ours. I dug a deep hole, cut the bottom off the can, only to discover that I did not have a lid for the can. I REALLY like the lid on this product, it looks durable and easy to use. I did not relish the though of lifting the lid every time I scooped. So I bought one of these to use in my hole about a month ago. Well, it turns out this is a mini septic tank. The bottom can is sealed on the bottom and has an overflow tube. It uses the type of composting that is in water. You add enzymes to break down the waste, and then what's left flows over the top of the overflow tube and into the ground. I also discovered, after reading the instructions, that this will not work in clay soil. My soil is so clay, I added a little water to make it easier to dig, and the water stayed for days! Seeing that this type of composting would not work for me, I modified mine. I cut the bottom off, used the can as a lid, (I know an expensive lid!), and used it that way. My hole, big enough for a garbage can was too big, so I cut pieces of my garbage can (plastic) and put it around the Dooley and filled in my hole around it. It works great so far. The top flange and the lid itself are plastic, so I worry about sun damage and cracking, but so far so good. Since my soil is clay, water drains very slowly out of my hole. I dropped some of the enzyme pellets in anyway to see what happens. There is still a lot of water in my hole, but so far no smell. It has been cold, so it might be worse in the summer. LOTS OF FLYS!!!! But I figure better inside the Dooley, than outside in the yard. At least the spiders will be able to feed of the Dooley that having to build webs all over the yard like they do now.
