You do need an octagonal box to mount without a can. I needed light in a low plaster/lath hallway ceiling where a recessed can would not work. I went with this after using a 4 inch square LED and a 6 by 4 foot in a kitchen and liked the effect. Color is adjustable in three steps 3000K, 4000K, and 5000K.
