It was the catchy theme song that originally drew my attention to this classic, but at once I was attracted to the artwork and the animation when I saw snippets of the show on YouTube. When my order finally arrived, I was very impressed by the very simple packaging, which is replete with artwork from the show and Cutey Honey flashed all over and inside the box. You can tell that whoever designed the packaging did so with love, especially when compared to some inferior packaging design from bigger studios that have given us questionable blu ray and DVD boxsets for the likes of Avatar, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. This series is a worthy and natural successor to Go Nagai's Devilman TV series, which was shown in Japan the previous year. Much of the artwork and animation is very similar between the two shows, and one of the characters in Cutey Honey looks literally like Akira Fudo's brother from the Devilman series. There's nothing wrong with plagiarizing your own artwork; I guess if it works then why fix it, right Go Nagai? Finally there is the content itself, which spans 25 episodes. Though not as long of a show as Devilman's 30+ episodes, Cutey Honey is still fulfilling and will take up a good chunk of your time if you binge watch the show. Though one should be aware that the season abruptly ends seemingly without a definite conclusion; the reason being that the Cutey Honey 1973 TV show is tied in with Go Nagai's manga of Cutey Honey which came out at around the same time. So if you want to find out how Cutey Honey finally deals with Panther Zora and Sister Jill as they pertain to the TV series, you must seek out the manga editions and read them. Cutie Honey is a very good look at the early history of the 'transforming' super hero. The entire genre owes, in a way, it's entire existence on the ideas Cutie Honey embodies, Although Cutie Honey is in fact a Shonen (Boys Genre) of Anime. The DVD set is compact, neat, and pretty simple. All in Japanese with English subs that can be turned off. The audio and Picture are excellent, obviously having been beautifully restored at some point. Beautiful , crisp picture, natural grain, psychedelic colors, funky 70's fashion. Goofy humor. Cutie Honey is great. I'd heard about the 90s ova but the snippets of the show I saw at the panel really ignited my interest in the show. When I got this DVD and started watching it, it was exactly what I was hoping it would be! It's a little more shonen than magical girl, and the animation may seem shoddy by today's standards, but the series is loads of fun and I really can say that my collection is much better for having this in it.
