You use regular rit for cottons. Dye is translucent and covers the fabric evenly, so the whole garment will take dye essentially equally. This means that lighter spots will remain lighter, and darker spots will continue to be darker. Additionally, bleach has a tendency to damage fibers in such a way that they will not take the dye at all, or they will take it in strange ways, resulting in off colors. **Q: I want to dye a very red polyester plush robe to a burgundy color. Would this work?** A: It might make it darker, but I doubt it. I dyed a white polyester petticoat and it turned a medium to light grey.
