    Roarrr! Update 12/10/12

*by M***7 on Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2012*

This is a UPDATE review for the BBK 17785 black out version of the BBK 1778. The only difference between the two is intake pipe is black instead of chrome. All other parts in kits are identicle. In present configuration these two kits must be altered in order to fit your 2013 Mustang V6 properly and minimize consequential paint and rust damage to your vehicle. Alterations require 3 things,. 1. Grind material from contact area on airbox that contacts fender at the back of airbox and/or secure rubber pad to fender contact area to minimize metal to metal contact. I chose to do both with new kit prior to install. 2. Drill new hole thru hold down flange approx 1/4" over from original hole to push airbox towards passenger side of vehicle and eliminate metal to metal contact at lip at top of fender. 3. Drill two new holes in bottom of airbox approx 1/4" over from original holes to also push airbox towards passenger side of vehicle and to match change in 2. 4. Prep and paint damaged metal surfaces to seal bare metal and minimize rust.I tried to work thru the issues involved with this product through BBK customer service. They did address chafing issue on airbox and agreed to send me a new kit that was well protected for shipment. New kit had no shipping damage that original shipment had. But, new airbox did have the same gap issue that original airbox had. I was told that BBK could not address fit issue because this would require reprogramming of automated equipment that makes the airbox and that takes time. Or so I was told. Due to the inability to address fit issue i have changed the original 3 star rating to 1 star. From this point on all info is from original review of BBK 17785 dated 11/30/12I wish to share some of my findings/insight and review the BBK-17785 2011-13 Mustang V6 BBK Blackout Series Cold Air Intake Kit. I purchased from AutoAnything.com for my 2013 mustang 3.7L V6. When product was received i was quite happy to open my "Made In Usa" cold air kit. All items were loose in box without support. I pulled the airbox out of box 1st and was surprised to see white residue all over it. I washed off residue with dampened paper towels and dried off. In one spot (approx 3" x 4") the powder coating was chafed enough to knock the sheen off coating and almost see the metal underneath. I realized that the reason for the white residue/chafing was contact vibration/movement between white cardboard box that filter was in and airbox while in shipment. I looked over intake tube which was well protected with white paper and covered with plastic. All was well here. Finish on tube was excellent. I thought that it sure would have been nice if airbox had been wrapped in the same manner. I decided to install kit while on Thanksgiving holiday sometime after getting to my destination. 2 days after thanksgiving I decided to install. I removed radiator cover and intake from vehicle. I picked up airbox and immediately noticed that there waz a 1" seam on inside corner that had been missed during the welding process. "Made In USA", ehhhhh? I don't know why i missed before but did. If I had picked up this defect along with chafing issue to begin with, I would have returned product and gotten one from another manufacturer. I then assembled filter to tube through airbox and secured with stainless steel clamp. I secured metal studs to airbox and carefully placed front airbox mounting hole over radiator support and metal studs in grommets on fender. Something didn't feel right and I pulled assembly back off and corner of airbox had scratched thru a layer or two of paint on fender. Not enough to see bare metal. I cut a small piece off my fender protector to place under corner to prevent further damage to paint. Placed unit back as before and attempted to install airbox hold down bolt. The edge of airbox was sitting against top lip of driver side fender. The ideal correction for this issue would be either to remove airbox and cut/grind about 1" x 1/4" of metal, or bend metal to eliminate contact with top lip on fender. Both of these options will damage powder coating and expose bare metal. I chose the bending method since a grinder was not readily available. I sealed exposed metal and 1" void with black silicon. Connected blue silicon reducer to throttle body. Then I took mustang on road test and put my foot in it and was impressed with the performance + and the new "ROAR" from under the hood. Definite improvement! My installation looks good and I am satisfied with appearance. Love the black tube over chrome hands down! Only i know what i had to do to install but the average joe will notice nothing amiss. It took me about an hour to install. I will give this intake kit three stars. But with a few tweaks on airbox, increased production oversite, and proper protective packaging would certainly make this a five star item in my book!
