There’s A little bit of space in between the two. The smaller umbrella covers an opening on the top of the larger umbrella that creates the ventilation. No mesh. I hope that helps. It really works well for rain or sun. **Q: Picture shows top canopy turned upward, inside out. I can't seem to make the one I bought do that, why?
