I got a decade-plus (December 1999 - February 2014) out the original. I didn't see any obvious wear on the screen - nothing that a little cleaning couldn't fix (I used a couple of toothpicks and my fingernails). A bit of something acidic might help - a good soak in the demineralization solution or maybe even a good mouthwash should get off a lot of the crud. I really bought this kit for the gasket. I think that's the item that actually wears out. Unless you're running tons of really caustic stuff through the machine, I don't see why the screens won't last a lifetime. Note - the gasket fits tightly and well. It's hard to pull out. I poked and tweaked with a knifepoint and couldn't make progress. I finally hand-twisted a woodworking screw into the gasket to make a handle to pull it out. Obviously, this destroys the old gasket, so there's no going back once you do this. With the screw in place, the gasket came right out. I picked up this tip from a YouTube video, and it works. The new gasket slips right in with a little pushing. Finally, use the portafilter once or twice to set it in place. The old gasket was leaking and left me no choice but to replace it. This replacement kit comes with what you need; nothing more and nothing less. The most difficult part of the process was removing the old gasket (which took about 10 minutes). After a thorough cleaning with Cafeza and a nylon bristled brush, I installed the new gasket. I have read other reviews that said they reused the old screen and screw, but saw no reason not to use the new ones. After replacing the gasket, screen and screw I pulled a shot and it made me wish I had done this a long time ago. Not only does the group head no longer leak, but I have much better pressure through the group head; resulting in a great deal more crema. This "tune up" was relatively quick, quite easy, and a great improvement to the functioning of my machine.
