As a massage therapist, I give them to clients to put in a sock or stocking, throw them over their shoulder and back up against the wall to treat various muscles and muscle groups in the upper back. Each the hockey balls has enough give to reach into painful areas, but is sturdy enough to provide good pressure. They cost very little and are highly appreciated by everyone who receives one.
