Denzel also played Navy psychologist Lieutenant Commander Jerome Davenport along with Derek Luke as Fisher. The movie is about Fisher confronting his horrific upbringing and the family that abandoned him.Fisher was in the Navy and kept on getting in trouble. He was about to be kicked out when he was assigned to see Davenport for counseling and assessment. At first, Fisher was defiant and wouldn’t say anything in his sessions. Eventually he opened up about why he always got in trouble. He grew up an orphan. He was taken in by a foster family who beat him and psychologically tortured him. He used to be tied up and left in the basement in the dark for instance. His foster sister tried to molest him. That made him so mad when he became an adult he was ready to explode at any moment.Commander Davenport is able to get Antwone over his initial anger but tells him that only by confronting his family can he really get over things. That’s where the movie goes in the second half.The movie is extremely powerful and moving. The upbringing Fisher went through was a horror no kid should have endured. Denzel does a good job as his mentor, and the end is very touching. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wish we could all have a Dr. Jerome Davenport *by N***L on Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2020* I believe, that even though we try to focus on the good in our lives, most of us have had some horrific thing that took place during our childhood that created problems for us later. None of us truly know why we react to certain smells, sounds, fibers, tastes, lights etc. Things that set off feelings of angst that we can't seem to shake and don't know why. Kindness and love towards others needs to abound, but sometimes we attack or are attacked by the very people trying to reach us. This is a movie about a give/get/give/get scenario that takes you deeper into the reason behind what APPEARS to be Antwone's nature, and possibly our own. We do not have to remain behind the walls we create to protect ourselves, but we may need help breaking those walls down. Anyway, I just watched it, and I am floored by the story and performances. The chemistry between Denzel and Derek is amazing. I wanted to see more and more of them together. What a warm story of mentorship and kindness. It is shameful that this movie didn't receive major awards.
