You cannot read by this light.The inferred remote is impressively sensitive. It works quite well even through the paper shade. The remote provides several levels of dimming as well as the buttons for 'fast' or 'slow' flicker.Was hoping the 'flicker' feature would be more random and give the look of a candle or flame. The 'flicker' is a fixed pattern of dimming levels.This item is a kit. Three separate items come packaged together as as a single kit.
