I think it would work fine. **Q: Will it work on 55 gal plastic drums** A: Yes. I have used it several times to lift plastic drums. **Q: will this safely lift 30 gallon drums?** A: Yes. I use this drum clamp to unload a 30 gal. plastic drum of diesel fuel from my pickup. Works great, however I suggest a second person to hold clamp in place during the pick sequence. **Q: will this work with a 16 gallon open-top barrel?** A: It should fit the 16 gallon drum just fine.
