This device is for treating water input to a tankless water heater in a NON-municipal water system; i.e., private well water. This device is NOT a filter. The device slowly dissolves polyphosphates in the water. It ADDS polyphosphates which bond to inorganic chemicals: iron, manganese, etc., that is in the water. These create a thin coat in the plumbing which prevents decomposition of metals in the water lines; copper, lead, etc. and it prevents the buildup of scale. HOWEVER, most public water treatment facilities ALREADY add polyphosphates to the municipal water, so adding this to a home system is redundant, but could be considered a backup/sure thing that inhibition is accomplished. However, for tankless heaters on a municipal water system, do the flushing with vinegar as recommended by the tankless heater manufacturer to remove a six-month buildup of scale in the heater to clear the heater of built up scale. **Q: How do you know when to change out the filter? Is there a gauage on the filter to show you when it is full of dirt?** A: This is not a filter so it will never be full of dirt. Best practice for this and all your home filter needs is to just change everything on your birthday. The manufacture recommends changing the cartridge (not a filter) when there is still about 1/3 of the polyphosate beads remaining. **Q: What is the thread size at the top of the filter?** A: Hi, CJ - there is no info on that in the papers that come with this unit - but when first installed, you need to buy the matching 'T'-shaped pipe that fits the threads exactly. Can I use this to protect against corrosion within the copper pipes?** A: The device contains polyphosphate beads. The water flows over the beads which attach to inorganics in the water that could cause scale buildup in the tankless heater. Won't do much good against corrosion of copper pipes which generally can last 50 to ONE HUNDRED YEARS! This is a pre-treatment of water going into a tankless water heater. I love it. When I called a plumber to service/flush it out 3 years after the initial installation, he advised me to get this filter which I did & he installed.
