I think my only beefs with the stone is that when it arrived, the corners were a little beat up, but that is more likely due to the sipping process than the quality of the stone. Also one side of the stone wasn't flat--and I do not yet have a flattening stone. Although I have to say, it was not near as bad as some stones I have recently purchased from other companies.I generally do the sandpaper method for sharpening my chisels and plane irons. I stop at 1200 to 1500 grit paper; I would get a mirror finish. I was a little concerned as once I went from the 1500 grit, to the 3k and then 8k side of the stone, the chisels and irons got cloudy and lost their luster. This was a little frustrating, but a quick inquiry in an online forum informed me that this was normal and after a good strop, I should have an even better mirror finish. And it worked! I don't have a strop, but a little polishing compound and a single-ply piece of cardboard made a big enough difference for me.As soon as I was done with the sharpening and stopping, I edge-planed several pieces of Goncalo Alves (or Tigerwood), which has a hardness just over Hickory. GA is 1850 lbf on the Janka Hardness Scale, whereas Red Oak is 1290 lbf. I am not going to tell you that the iron went through it like a hot knife through butter, but it made for easier work than expected. I was pleasantly surprised.While some folks don't like the mess of water stones, I think the sandpaper method is a bit messier. I will still likely get a diamond plate or two to help "reset" edges to square or repair damaged blades, but I am thinking about possibly getting the 400/1000 grit from this company. I do not regret this purchase. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good value *by M***. on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 11, 2019* I purchased this waterstone (3000G/8000G) as a compliment to diamond stones I currently use. Ordering was easy and delivery was timely. The stone was in good condition when opened and the packaging was very good.As a precaution, I drew grids on both sides of the stone, and used a flattening stone to ensure they were flat. Of note, both sides of the stone were high in the center and required some flattening to match the perimeter. Also, the flattening stone removed quite a bit of material on the 3000G side. Not as much on the 8000G side.I chose a used Stanley 220 block plane (recently purchased) as the test case for this stone. Prior to using this waterstone, I did some initial backside flattening and blade honing on 300G/1000G diamond stone. Then spent the next 20-30 minutes with each side of the waterstone. I then did a few passes on a leather strop to remove the burr. No issues with the flattening and honing, and a nice edge was created. After some blade adjustment, nice shavings were the result when planing poplar, walnut, and hard maple. After about 20 minutes of use, the blade required additional honing.As a check, I did the next round of honing of the blade with a 4000G/8000G diamond stones. Again, a nice edge was formed, with the burr removed via stropping. After blade adjustment, excellent shavings were the result. In my opinion, thinner and more consistent shaving were created after using the diamond stone. The edge also stayed sharp for a longer period of time.Given the price of the waterstone, as compared to the diamond stone, it provides a good user edge, and is a reasonable value. You will pay 4X for a good diamond stone, so it is a decision of price vs sharpness and edge longevity for the user. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Cheap But Doable *by H***Y on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 26, 2021* It's a cheap stone, best to recognize that. I used it for honing my razors. To start I lapped it with a flattening stone and instantly the orange dyes came off for that side and the white dyes came off as well. I gave it a good soak and got nice water going. It polishes the blade well and after after some passes I finished it on a cheap colonel Conk stone and stropped on a coated block. Passes the hanging hair test just fine. This is good to get started on a budget like I did, and you get a usable edge but I do recommend keeping it for learning how to hone now then upgrading in the future. For the price it's doable though the quality on the dyes put me off at first.
