We bought it in the USA and used it in POLAND, it shuts down with catastrophic results, DO NOT USE IT WITH 220 V SOCKET, ONLY 120 **Q: how is the plug configured?** A: The plug sticks out about 3/4" from the wall and the cable drops down and to the right so it does not block an outlet above or below it. **Q: Does this unit have an on-off switch?** A: Yes, it is next to where the cord connects to the body of the unit. **Q: We have an old house with outlets with only two slots. No space for the third prong. Will I be able to use this?** A: No, it won't work with 2-prong outlets. The missing third prong is the grounding conductor. The surge protection function can't work of the outlet isn't properly connected to a grounding conductor. IF your old house is wired with BX cable (the type where the wires are enclosed in a flexible metal sheath), you may be able to install the surge protector to use the BX cable sheath as the grounding conductor. But check with an electrician. I bought this from amazon after reading the other reviews and I must say that it lives up to its reputation! I live in a rural area where inclement weather can make the power flicker and we have regular outages in winter or high winds and this surge protector has protected my router, kerosine heater and computers with ease. The fact that it can protect not only the power outlets but also protect against surges through phone lines (which I run our DSL through) and coaxial lines such as cable, is the best. My heater, which is a 120 volt Toyostove kerosine heater, got zapped in a thunderstorm and now (after a $350 repair) is connected to this surge protector and I haven't had a problem since. My DSL isn't slowed by running it through the protector and it has easily protected my router (which my provider is used to replacing regularly in my area due to power fluctuations). It has a long cord so it can reach just about anywhere where you would use a surge protector and the spaced out plugs are great for bulky electronics plugs. I'd highly recommend this surge protector!
