Review: Excellent Book for learning Classical Guitar music! - This book was perfect! I’m a big fan of the author’s site for classical guitar. It’s hard to know which books are right for my skill level, but this book (as well as his books for exercise and technique) had a perfect combination of tunes to expand with and pairs well with his instruction videos. It’s reasonably priced and perfect for someone who is familiar with guitar but newer to classical.
Review: A Mite Too Tight In Hindsight - Another reviewer wrote that this book should've been spiral-bound... to which I enthusiastically-replied: "I'm so interested in the content, I don't really care about the binding, as long as it's legible. If I don't like it, I'll just rip it off!" (or something to that effect). And I still somewhat feel that way. But now that I've actually received my own copy, I have to agree with that other guy. The book is barely usable the way that it's bound. But I've decided not to deduct any stars for that. Perhaps I would've, had I not seen the earlier review, and bought this book anyway after knowing about the binding issue. The content is legible, and print quality very good. So I was left to make good on my overly-zealous mutilation threat. Being a 'book purist'... I must admit that was a challenge. I never even mark/highlight/violate a book (unless I find an error... which sadly happens with amazing frequency btw!?!). It's sort of like sacrilege to me. So prying-off the cover... of a brand new (fairly expensive) book... was a bit of a challenge for me. But I managed to do it. This is hardly the first/only/last music book to be bound this way. And I'm sure minimizing production cost motivated the choice. But in this instance, it clearly was the wrong choice. This author worked so hard to get things right, and in general pays so much attention to detail, that I'm more disappointed than I otherwise would've been had the book been flawed in other ways. I personally would've preferred more Romantic or Baroque stuff and less Renaissance (well, it's not fair to call those lute-y-ly-depressing dungeon dirges... 'crap', as they're just not my preference). And I'm already familiar with many of the other pieces. But again, that's not the author's fault. He did disclose the T.O.C. So no detraction there either. But it comes down to this: Trying to learn a rock or folk song is one thing. But for anything ~nearly~ this studious... (all the included works aren't, but a few like Asturias are) THE MUSIC HAS TO LAY FLAT! Being distracted by curvy-shadows, page-distortions, and required neck-contortions... you really can't expect to get very far (before wanting to hurt somebody!). As an instructor... I'm sure the author knows that. So allowing a detail like that to detract so much, is undoubtedly a fail. It would've been a far better choice to use cheaper paper, or a less attractive cover (which I now can frame, since I had to rip it off) in exchange for better utility... or at least offer a spiral (or better yet, unbound) version. That would've been a much better idea. That being said, I intended to take the cover-less guts to a print shop to have the pages sheared loose. But once I removed the cover, it was much easier to get the pages to lie flatter. I'm sure they'll eventually slow- ly come apart on their own so I'll save myself the trip and let them do so. But overall, the book is very good though! (And ~almost~ worth the fair chunk of dough!) ~KinniK~
