Review: Great book! - Extremely helpful, I’m working through it and I think it’s excellent. It’s great to play along with the examples. I also received the audio tracks of another book by mistake and they fixed this issue ASAP. I’m quite pleased with this book and the customer service.
Review: A practical, useful, informative guide for guitarists looking to play better - I'm in my 60's, and I've been playing guitar and other stringed instruments (mandolin, fiddle, banjo) for most of my life. I've always depended on my ear, which is pretty good, and on the bits of theory I'd pick up here and there. Mostly I've played out of patterns, major scales, and minor pentatonic scales. A lot of guitar can be played out of patterns, but I've always felt I was missing a whole world of possible sounds and expressions, and decided to do something about it. I began buying books on various aspects of guitar playing, mostly tending toward jazz chords, arpeggios, extensions, and that sort of thing. I've found a few books worth studying, but this one, The Practical Guide to Modern Music Theory for Guitarists, is definitely the one I'd be happy to refer any guitarist looking to better his/her playing abilities. Mr. Alexander begins the book with a fairly complete look at how music works--the major scale, minor scales, how chords are built, common chord progressions, and the like. I thought I knew most of this stuff, but he managed, with straightforward, clear expositions, to fill me in on details that I hadn't realized I hadn't known. The meat of the book, once the preliminaries are out of the way, focuses on modes and how they can be utilized; building chords on the individual degrees of each mode, soloing, and much more. There's much work to be done by the student here, but much to be gained. I've been working with the Dorian mode to begin, but I'll be utilizing the information in this well-written book for many months, at least. I feel like my playing has already benefitted from the studies presented here, though I've only begun. I can't recommend this book highly enough to my fellow guitarists.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great book for guitar players who want to learn music theory
*by E***F on August 9, 2020*

I would give this book 4.5 stars if that was an option. It's very close to 5 stars except for a few minor flaws. They are so nit-picky they are not worth mentioning. The print version of the book is about 110 pages. A file of accompanying scales and solos is available for download from the publisher's web site that enhance the material. The book is laid out in a logical order, starting with the major scale, chord construction, and harmony. The concepts are explained well and are easy to understand. I started taking notes while I was reading the book but after a number of times writing go to page x, this is important, I gave up taking notes. After that modes are explained and the author has a chapter on the important modes and how they can be used to make your solos sound more interesting. This is a book I will keep handy. While the book is easy to understand, there are a lot of concepts and the number of them can be overwhelming. That is not a problem with the book - that is music theory. Hopefully with repetition and practice I can remember what I need to. Modern Music Theory for Guitarists won't make you a genius but if you want to go beyond what you've taught yourself from a web site or You Tube, this is a great place to start. I recommend this book.
