Since most of the real important things that I print are performed by my desk top with the much better printer, I set out to get something cheap, and, that would simply just do the job for quick printing needs. Does it work with windows 8?** A: 8 & 8.1 yes AND ALSO: all versions of xp and vista & versions of windows 7.., BUT if its a new printer then it usually has 2 cartridges thats supplied with it to begin with ( BUT i think those cartridges are like 1/2 to 3/4s full & they dont last to long - or the ones i got with mine didnt anyway ) BUT it works with the above OSs aswell as ubuntu linux & linux mint 17 .., NOTE ubuntu linux alredy has the printer drivers installed & u need only choose the port ur going to use.., u can find ink at www.private.abacus24-7.com, hp 61 & 61xl cartridges .., & LASTLY: dont worry abt. HPs gripe about using re-manufactured ink cuz the printers' warranty is like 30 or 90-days & after its run out hp wudnt repair or replace the printer anyway ! so what business is it of theirs whether u buy an ink refill kit here on amazon OR some-other place & refill ur own cartridges OR buy it from another place other than hp ??.. **Q: mac compatible?** A: Yes, it works well with all of our macs!! **Q: Do you have to install a CD in your laptop in order for it to work ??** A: You can download drivers on-line from the HP website or a 3rd party if you don't have a working CD drive. I hooked mine up to an older HP desktop and it worked, both with Windows, and with Linux operating systems. If one goes down, I always have the other, and I will usually let the laptop run most of the time as it consumes less energy and takes care of most of the days junk like email and searches. The problem I was having, is that I run a full capability HP 6500 for the desktop but the laptop did not have print capabilities until I ran across this little guy. At $30.00 (now higher) it is a very good bargain, and takes care of what little printing I need for the laptop. I could spool to the laptop, but this was just easier, and gives me more redundancy. The printer was very easy to set up, and was up and running in a few minuets. I have been using HP pen and inkjet printers since before they were offered as personal computer printers when all we had was the dot matrix type and ink was used for CAD Drafting/Design printing only and we replaced a pen at a time, and then on to the cartridge. It is true, that HP makes most of there money off of the sale of ink cartridges, and not the initial sale of the printer, but at the very low cost of this unit, and the relatively low cost of the cartridges this machine uses, this is probably overall, the lowest cost HP printer you will find.
