CAN'T SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS !!! - After years of trapping moles + pocket gophers ( and now needing to trap ground squirrels, which is a whole other subject ) ... and after taking a free lesson from a nursery to do so using the CINCH traps... FINALLY now a nearly PERFECT TRAP for the tunnelers...no lessons needed and more success! 1) It's NOT TERRIFYING to set + I can't see any possible way you could crush, break, bruise, cut or otherwise hurt your fingers with this trap! (CINCH was always a tad scary for me + more strength is needed) 2) It's unbelievably EASY and FAST to set (once you have estimated the active tunnel location) 3) It's unbelievably EASY to know when it's been activated + to remove the vermin 4) If you watch some Youtube videos or read about being careful w the straps, you'll be better informed about how to handle it. And the straps are replaceable. 5) You don't need much strength to set this. The secret to success (after learning how to NOT damage the straps) is to position it properly in an active tunnel. Our vermin seem to have the IQ of a rocket scientist. A pocket gopher actually detoured a new tunnel AROUND the straps. Oops... new hole nearby + unsprung trap! That was okay... I put my gloved fingers into the new hole ( as far as I could, since my vermin now twist + turn their active tunnels... it can be a real challenge, I insert a thin rod sometimes to follow the curve ) And within minutes, we had the bugger. Being in the high desert, we have areas that are sandy, + areas that have great soil. In areas where the ground is very soft and inconsistent, it's more difficult to find the right place + sometimes to keep the trap upright. In sandy soil, when I reach the bottom of the tunnel, I raise the trap ever so slightly to keep the straps free, + sometimes I use a couple of large rocks to hold it upright + to keep it from sinking too much into the ground of the tunnel (I don't want the straps to get "stuck" in the sand, but I don't know if that's even possible,) Additionally, we have the following challenges: vermin invading our bumpy berm that is covered w Wooley Thyme + other delicacies that make it hard to detect runs PLUS vermin that now make turns in their active tunnels, sometimes within a foot or less, and sometimes several times, making it difficult to know where to position the trap. I didn’t expect that to happen for me but I was really surprised when I went out a few hours later and the yellow band on the trap was showing, indicating that the trap was sprung. I pulled the trap out of the hole and out comes a very angry gopher! I was sorry he was still alive and that I had to finish the job but for the moment the gopher war seems to be over. Bottom line for this trap: It works. It feels a little pricey but it’s worth it. It is much easier to use than any other gopher trap I have used and it feels cleaner. The business end of the trap doesn’t get near you. If you only have a small gopher problem you should get the insertion tool also (as a kit) but you only need the one tool if you buy multiple traps for a bigger infestation. If I had any issues with this trap it would be that the gopher wasn’t already dead when I pulled the trap out of the hole. The trap is designed with kind of flat “straps” that spring up to trap the gopher when he bumps the trigger. Makes for less blood but not as instantly lethal. Finally, either read the instructions carefully about how to set the trap or (my choice) watch a video. It matters how you set the trap and it takes a little bit of strength to arm it. As for me, I am happily repairing the lawn damage and chewed up sprinkler valve wires from this gopher while I check daily for new gopher evidence. Gophers, I no longer fear you!!! I wear a sized 16 shoe and death for the animal is certain and immediate. Sounds gruesome, but It only suffers in the snare another second or 2 from the time I retrieve it utill It's dead. Dont get me wrong. I'm not holding a funeral wake for any of these destructive pests, but I take no satisfaction in it either. It's just to me the quickest easiest way. **Q: I accidentally ordered just the trap. Can it be set without the wedge and probe tools?** A: The probe is easy to do without - just use a long screw driver to find the hole. The wedge is going to be harder to live without. It does a nice job opening up the tunnel without collapsing it. My advice would be to buy another full kit and then you can have two traps set at the same time. **Q: Just double checking, does this really work on moles?** A: It is not designed to work on moles. I have caught moles with this trap but the mole was using a gopher tunnel, not his own shallow one. **Q: I see in the reviews that this unit has broken for some after only a few uses. What is the warranty on this unit?** A: My wedge tool broke so I emailed them about warranty. There is zero warranty! Not only have I purchased 6 of these but two of my neighbors also purchased a bunch because I told them about the trap. As was I. So I bought the set with a probe and an extra head over a year ago. The set is a must. I am really shocked about how well thought out the set is. The pvc pointed tube has the probe incorporated into the handle. Snug fit- it’s not going anywhere without you pulling it out. So you find a fresh mound, probe around it till you find the spot that gives. You found the tunnel! Put the probe back in the tube. Put the pointed tube at the probe mark and rock it until the hole you made intersects with the tunnel. Pull it out. Then grab your gopher hawk, spring side up, put the end down to the bottom of the tunnel. Then pull the outer sleeve up until the spring is loaded and clicks. The three prong metal expander thing is ready for its victim! Yes I watched a few videos, they were helpful. I am still so excited to use this at every opportunity I can! I have caught about 12, some are quick and some are sneaky, so occasionally a little more patience is required. If I haven’t caught the little booger within 18 hours, I just move it to another tunnel. I pull them up to see how big the are, inflict mercy if not dead, drop them in the hole and cover the hole up. It’s rare now I have them in my yard, sadly… So I have been known to mosey to my neighbors looking for mounds! Just got one of theirs today.
